Schedule
Filed Under General News | Leave a Comment
There will be no changes to the schedule for Friday and Saturday prelim rounds.
On Sunday, Novice LD and Public Forum will break to a partial double-octas round at 8:00 AM. A revised debate schedule will be released at some point once we have a few last details sorted out, but hopefully everything will be finished by 3:30 for awards.
Extemp Prep will be in Fayerweather, a change from last year.
Also note that we do not have the Auditorium room where folks would hang out in Lerner Hall until Sunday. We’re not happy about this either; we thought we had it reserved a few days after last year’s tournament, but apparently not. On Saturday therefore we’re going to be hanging out in all kinds of random spaces throughout Lerner. The School, where many VLD and PFD rounds are happening, will have a cafeteria space for hanging out.

Schedule Changes Coming
Filed Under General News | Leave a Comment
Please be advised because of some, ah, adventures in room reservations, and an unexpectedly large field in Public Forum Debate, there will be schedule changes this week from the schedule posted in the invitation. We will not be changing the times for Friday registration, however; your travel plans will not need to be altered as a result. It is possible, however, that the debate final rounds will occur after awards; not before. I hate having to do that, but the other option is waitlisting folks who are currently in the tournament.
The good news is that even though Columbia is a standing TOC semis bid in PFD, we have 76 teams and seven states entered in PF. So, unless a sudden case of plague takes out 1/3rd of our entry, that qualifies us for a quarterfinals bid according to TOC guidelines.
Also, we have 100 slots in Varsity LD and 60 slots in Novice LD. Currently there are 42 people on the waitlist for Varsity LD and 55 for Novice LD. These numbers mean if you haven’t yet registered in these divisions, there is unfortunately zero chance of you getting into this year’s Columbia tournament. There is likewise no chance of anyone getting a 6th entry, as we first take entries who have not gotten their initial 5 into the tournament. No amount of begging in Palmer, Menick or Vaughan’s direction will change these facts. Would that we had infinite rooms, but we do not.

Thank you to everyone who made the 8th Columbia Invitational a terrific time. Lots of people thank us, the tournament staff, when the tournament goes well, but our efforts are only one part of the equation. The efforts of the competitors and judges in traveling to the tournament, picking up ballots, walking all the way to Teacher’s College, and above all speaking, performing and debating are what make a tournament truly great. Congrats to all, and we hope to see you next year!
